Do you have a carpet that, although looks good and still has plenty of life left in it, smell?
Getting rid of carpet odours can be quite an easy and quick process. Saving you from ripping up the carpet and throwing it out. Depending on the type of smell or cause of the odour, there are several things to try. The most common types of odour are from spilt food or drink, sinking down into the carpet and going mouldy. Damp and mildew can also happen in some rooms, causing the carpet to become a wet and smelly. Pets can also be a cause of bad smells staying in the carpet.
There are several ways to try and remove the smells.
Hire a carpet cleaning machine
Hiring a carpet cleaning machine can be quite expensive, but cost effective if you are going to do the whole house. Although there is quite a bit of effort moving it through the house. Make sure you don't go cheap on the chemicals required as the better ones will do a much better job at thoroughly cleaning the carpet. Allow several hours for the carpet to dry, some even would need to be left overnight to fully dry, dependant on the weather.
Fabric sprays/powders
While a spray or powder will remove the carpet smell for a while, it will not get rid of the underlying problem and will require repeated treatment.
Carpet foam cleaner
A more thorough and isolated option would be to use a carpet foam cleaner. This is great for an isolated area, not the entire carpet! Hoover the carpet, apply the foam and rub into the areas needed. Leave to dry for 20-30 minutes until dry, then hoover the area again.
Bicarbonate of Soda
Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over your carpet, rub in with a soft brush and leave overnight. Hoover up in the morning and it should help remove some of the smells.
